Congratulations to sixth-grade teacher Joan Swanson who was recognized as the September FCPS Cares Recipient of the Month for Region 2 by the Department of Human Resources. Congratulations, Ms. Swanson!

Below is the write up submitted by a parent of a student in Ms. Swanson's sixth-grade class.

I’ve been a Fairhill parent for 11 years with my two kids and Ms. Swanson has thoroughly impressed me with her amazing motivation and enthusiasm for her students! She sends classroom updates with pictures almost every day, set up a 6th-grade class Twitter account, and has come up with so many creative ways to energize and motivate the 6th graders and keep their families engaged. For example, they have a “bank account” where students get rewarded for going above and beyond like supporting fundraisers and Fairhill community events. She motivates them to achieve goals with fun incentives like having a camp-out day in the classroom, complete with a video of a campfire, s’mores, and sleeping bags. This week, the students had a real author visit the classroom, and she shared updates and pictures with parents. I really appreciate all the effort that Ms. Swanson puts in to make 6th grade a wonderful learning environment for the students and the parents.
